2024 Colors of Success DEI Leadership Award Application

The Colors of Success DEI Leadership Award, presented annually by Greater Rochester Chamber, is presented to an individual who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in their workplace, and the Greater Rochester community with clear positive impacts as a result of these efforts. This award is our highest recognition for individual achievement related to DEI and is awarded annually.


AWARD CRITERIA:

The Colors of Success DEI Leadership Award recognizes individuals who:

  • Demonstrates excellence in sustained efforts toward advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace.
  • Directly contributes to DEI-related programs, policies, or initiatives that positively impacts the community issue/initiative.
  • Demonstrates commitment to coaching and/or mentoring others in the workplace, or in the community, as it relates to DEI.

For each of the three award criteria, please share a demonstration of these best practices and provide concrete examples - Max 500 Words. Please ensure your answers only pertain to the specific criteria listed below as it will help in the judging process.

Demonstrates excellence in sustained efforts toward advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace.


Below is only a framework of examples to help guide your narrative:


  • POLICIES: The nominee champions policies that drive diversity and inclusion efforts that are actively promoted to support access and engagement of all regardless of race, ethnicity, age, income level, sexual orientation, immigration status, and other protected classes.
  • RECRUITMENT: The nominee encourages active and intentional recruitment from a diverse pool of candidates and actively seeks ways to help promote and support staff. 
  • CAPACITY-BUILDING: The nominee develops and sustains resources for diversity and inclusion engagement that are promoted and evaluated across the organization. Examples may include having a diversity advisory committee, staff time for assessing organizational climate, and staff trainings around cultural competency, and through participation in a variety of professional development opportunities.
  • STRATEGIC PLAN: The nominee leads diversity and inclusion goals that are integrated into the strategic plan which are clearly communicated internally and externally as fundamental to advancing DEI and achieving organizational success. 

Directly contributes to DEI-related programs, policies, or initiatives that positively impacts the status of a community issue/initiative.

Below is only a framework of examples to help guide your narrative:

  • INCLUSIVE POLICIES: Membership/client categories, fee structures, programs, facilities, and marketing and communication strategies reflect community needs and interests and are measurably inclusive.
  • VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT: Volunteer work and advocacy targets marginalized groups, including people or color, sexual orientation, disabilities; and others. Time and talent are given to different organizations and efforts to help make the community a more inclusive place for all.
  • PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES: The Nominee leads programs and activities in the community that are inclusive and meet the needs and interests of constituents.

Demonstrates commitment to coaching and/or mentoring others in the workplace, or in the community, as it relates to DEI.

DEI Capacity Building Areas for Strategic Relationship Examples to Guide Your Narrative:

  • STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS: The nominee has strategic relationships with diverse community organizations/ individuals are promoted, maintained, and evaluated to increase the trust and credibility of DEI.
  • SUPPLIER DIVERSITY: Minority-owned and female-owned businesses and organizations are included among the nominee’s organization vendors and partners.
  • COMMUNITY PERCEPTIONThe nominee is viewed by the Greater Rochester community as a champion in promoting and supporting a diverse and inclusive workplace.
