The ATHENA Organizational Award® actively supports and celebrates the ATHENA mission of supporting, developing, and honoring women leaders, inspiring women to achieve their full potential—creating balance in leadership worldwide.

THE CRITERIA 

ATHENA Organizational Award® applicants are businesses or organizations that meet each of the following criteria:

  • Creates an organizational culture that encourages women employees to achieve their full leadership potential
  • Gives back to the larger community of women and girls by providing and/or supporting leadership development opportunities and initiatives
  • Is a woman-owned or woman-led organization. For clarity, woman-led means a woman is at the highest level of the company/organization
  • Has a minimum of 5 paid full-time employees that help with the day-to-day functions of the organization

QUALIFICATIONS

ATHENA Organizational Award® applicants may represent either the profit or not-for-profit sector. Previous ATHENA Organizational Award® Recipients are not eligible to apply, however past applicants may apply again.

Contribution and Organizational Impact

Led a cross-functional team to restructure the organization based on business processes versus functional design; streamlined the organization to save expenses.  Reduced organizational expenses by 30%.

Near completion is a capital campaign that is infusing XYZ Company with in excess of $xx million to finance ongoing expansion of the company.  As an example, the Trustees of the ABC Foundation recently awarded XYZ Company with an $000K grant for the renovation and expansion of out facilities.

To sharpen the focus on sales at XYZ Company, she assembled an internal team made up of several disciplines and levels within the company to look at entire sales organizations (one third of total staff), to make recommendations on improvements and to identify barriers to productivity.  The organization was re-engineered and reallocated.  Specifically, new job descriptions were prepared for every level of the sales organization.  Ms. Sample launched a direct sales call, on a two week basis.  The sales reps defined their own call schedule and now spend nine or ten days calling on their clients which has led to increased accountability for the staff.

For the last 10 years, Ms. Sample has earned a rating of 90% or better in the area of employee satisfaction, which is significantly more than the industry norm of 70%.  She won special recognition for achieving the highest employee satisfaction measurement in her peer group for the past two years, achieving 100% for 19xx and 19xx.

Creation of innovative programs for individual clients.  Between 88-90% of individuals come to XYZ Company as a result of word-of-mouth referral.

Improved the presentation, graphics, packaging, entertainment value, and product mix in order to respond to market research.  Focus group research, particularly among Gen-Xers, revealed different attitudes and interest existed and required marketing changes to build participation.  Research also showed the “graying” of the particular consumer.  Specific strategies were executed to enhance the relevance of XYZ Company to this important demographic group including new themes, refreshed product features, more diversified talent involved in marketing seen as “more like me” and more immediate reinforcement.  This has contributed to a xx% growth.

Defined the business and marketing strategy for the United States, which leads the decisions on marketing goals, coverage compensation, training, and customer communication.  XYZ Company maintained market share in the copier market, while growing systems and services to 70% of our business portfolio, contributing to overall profitability.  19xx was the best profit year in the history of the company.

The _____ _________ Program, created by Ms. Sample articulated the spirit of the community and caring that is synonymous with XYZ Company.  Since the program’s inception, individuals have donated over 29,000 hours of community service to schools and organizations in the Rochester community.

AS Vice President, Ms. Sample provides leadership to the administration of $18 million of workforce investment funds.  In addition, Ms. Sample serves on the xxx committees of xxx and has led the development of a new welfare-to-work pilot program in the hospitality industry.

Ms. Sample was appointed by Mayor William Johnson to be part of the Renaissance 2010 Development Team. Her ability to motivate others, her unique vision, and her reputation as a “Quick change agent” were all qualities that led to her selection.

Ms. Sample is a member of the Humane Society Board of Directors and Executive Committee Member.

Position/Organization:  Foundation for Multicultural Teaching, Financial Supporter    Dates Held:  00/00/00

Brought community leaders from the private and public sectors to help Hispanic youth.

Position/Organization:  Graduate, Board Member/Leadership Rochester                      Dates Held:  00/00/00

Selected as a member of the first class of Leadership Rochester, one of 400 leadership programs in the country.  It exists to train and educate existing and emerging leaders to encourage involvement in effecting positive change. As a board member, I designed, developed, and printed the first newsletter and yearbook.  Encouraged other members of the Rochester community and government to participate in this year-long program.  Secured continued funding for the program from Monroe County and other entities.

Contributions to the professional growth, development, and advancement of women

Co-founded a Rochester based business exchange peer group, made up of local CEO’s, and executive directors of community based organizations.  Besides sharing best practices, it was designed to influence political awareness and fundraising support for all parties among the women business leaders in the community.  Guest speakers included representatives from the Federal Reserve and the Kiplinger organization.

Ms. Sample mentors many women both inside and outside of XYZ Company.  She has created a mentoring database that enables mentors and participants to connect.  She has spoken to organizations in Rochester about diversity.  Ms. Sample was teamed with Mr.Blank of ABC Company to communicate the value of diversity, resulting in a well organized effective leadership group within ABC Company.  Ms. Sample coordinated the women’s groups across Rochester corporations for a number of networking events, such as benchmarking, informal dinners, and the 100 Women/100 Works women’s art events.  Participating organizations include groups from Eastman Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, Wegmans, Frontier, EDS as well as public sector groups.

As a female business and community leader, Ms. Sample is often asked to provide insight into women’s career issues and to present to women’s groups about the local economy.   She has also participated as a panelist to discuss topics that affect professional women.

Ms. Sample was named a Woman of Valor by the American Diabetes Association.  The award is given to women who demonstrate leadership and achievement and whose volunteer actions have a positive impact on the Rochester community.

In her role as vice president of XYZ Company and community leader, Ms. Sample is often invited to speak at educational events such as keynote speaker at Robert Wesleyan College’s MBA Commencement, career days at local school districts, and the Monroe County School-Business Education Partnership.
