Policy Matters: A Conversation with Senator Jeremy Cooney on the MRTA

Monday, October 18, 2021 (12:30 PM - 1:30 PM) (EDT)

Description

On March 31, 2021, the Marijuana Regulation & Taxation Act (MRTA) became law in New York State. The MRTA legalized adult-use cannabis which is commonly known as recreational marijuana. Join us for a conversation with New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney on the impacts and opportunities surrounding this legislation.

NYS Senator Cooney has been a vocal advocate of the passage of the MRTA since 2018 and has been active in the passage and enactment of the MRTA after he was elected in November 2020. Senator Cooney has collaborated with his colleagues across the legislature to ensure that those most impacted by the War on Drugs were able to participate in the new recreational cannabis economy. After the passage of the MRTA, Sen. Cooney has continued to advocate for social equity and resources for local businesses in the implementation of the legislation including carrying legislation that would start the new recreational cannabis legislation sooner through provisional growing licenses.

Sen. Cooney has hosted events aimed at recruiting MWBE entrepreneurs and marijuana conviction expungement, spoken on legal panels and podcasts, and met with community leaders to further learn how this legislation can do more to repair the harm caused by the War on Drugs.

Sen. Cooney is the inaugural chairman of the new Cities 2 Committee which is focused on cities outside of New York City, including Rochester. As part of his chairmanship, he recently completed his Regener8 Cities Tour which focused, in part, on economic development for the region.
