Description
he "Out of the Darkness" walks are a nationwide fundraising and awareness event series sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).
Purpose
The walks serve several key purposes
Raising Awareness: They bring suicide and mental health into the open, reducing stigma and encouraging conversations around these critical issues.
Providing Support: They create a supportive and understanding community for people who have been affected by suicide, including those who have lost loved ones, those who have struggled themselves, and those who want to support them.
Funding Prevention Efforts: Funds raised from the walks support AFSP's mission to prevent suicide through various initiatives:
Research: Investing in scientific research to understand suicide and develop prevention strategies.
Education: Delivering suicide prevention education programs in schools, workplaces, and communities.
Advocacy: Championing public policies to improve mental health care and suicide prevention at the local, state, and federal levels.

Types of Walks
AFSP offers several types of Out of the Darkness walks:
Community Walks: These are typically 5k (3.1 mile) events held in hundreds of communities nationwide. They provide an opportunity for individuals, families, friends, and coworkers to come together and show their support.
